At Olive Ridge Spaniels our goal is to produce a well bred and well rounded Springer Spaniel through selective breeding that focuses not only on working ability, but temperament and health. Our dogs are high energy, high paced spaniels bred from hunting champions for hunting homes. All breeding stock must not only pass health testing such as PennHip, CERF, and PFK testing, but also be proficient in the field. They must be steady to wing and shot, be able to quarter closely, efficiently and productively, and be able to retrieve on land and water. I believe that a good dog should be all that you'd ever want in a hunter, but also be a good upland hunting companion. That is why our dogs are hard hunters in the field and also have an even temperament to be part of your family.
I am a small breeder and I only plan on producing at the most one litter of puppies a year. The reason I've started a breeding program is to share my love of upland hunting and the joy I get hunting behind a well trained, high paced field bred spaniel. I've seen or heard of too many dogs out there that are bred for a quick buck without consideration of health or ability. This is a major step backward in the advancement of hunting breeds. Hopefully, I can do my little part by producing a high quality program and spreading quality, not quantity. I do believe most dog breeders in the hunting sport have good intentions and are not out to harm their breed's reputation or its genetics, but you must be able to educate yourself to do this. I will not let genetic defects or major issues in ability into my breeding program. If any genetic issues are found in the litter, they will be spayed or neutered and sold at a discounted price or as a started dog. Additionally, that breeding will NEVER take place again.
I've hunted big game and small game all of my life, but I believe nothing can compare to the exhilaration you get when your dog is on a strong scent. Yes, having that big bull elk in your sights is exhilarating, but how long does that last, and how many times a year can you afford to go on an elk hunt? In addition to the excitement of upland hunting, it's good exercise for both you and your dog even if they don't put anything out.
Best Regards,
Justin Smith
